How to sew a Salwar Kameez?

A Salwar Kameez is a beautiful style of clothing from India. They can be fancy or ordinary, and any color in the rainbow. It is designed to be worn in hot weather. It usually consists of a loose tunic and a pair of matching loose pants, which makes them easy to create. With a little time and patience, you'll be able to make your own salwar kameez for any occasion.

Get a pattern for the salwar kameez. You can find one at your local sewing store. Butterick has a very nice one available in their costume section. If you can't find one, you can also make your own. Check below for websites that will help you take the measurements.

If you're using a store pattern, read the directions carefully first. Following the instructions, cut out the pieces and pin them to the fabric. Make sure you mark areas where pieces will come together, like the sides of the salwar, and where the sleeves will be attached. If you're using your own pattern, get material that comes with a border at the bottom. This will be a ready made hem/trim for your sleeves and the bottom of your top and pants. Fold the material in half and pin your pattern to it at the folded edge. Remember to leave yourself enough space so you can do this twice for each piece; you'll need a front and a back for your top and bottom, as well as both sleeves. Start cutting, slowly and with the tips of your scissors for best control.

Once your material is cut, remove the patterns from it and pin the pieces together. Once the pieces are pinned together properly, get out your sewing machine and put them together. Take your time and go slowly!

When you've finished putting the pieces together, it's time for the finishing touches. Put the outfit on and see if it fits properly. Perhaps the neckline needs adjusting, or the pants are too long. Once you've made the adjustments, hem the neckline, sleeves and pants. Make sure your waistline fits you properly, and the neckline is neatly sewn. If you bought trim or an applique, put it on after everything else is done. Last but not least, use the extra material to make a scarf, called a dupatta, to drape over it.

Guess what? You're finished! You have constructed your first salwar kameez. Aren't you proud? Admire your handiwork and plan to make an even better one next time. And if people ask you where you got it, feel free to tell them proudly, "I made it myself."
Things To Keep In Mind
If you're too afraid to actually sew your own outfit, take the material and measurements to a handy friend. They'll love you for doing a chunk of the work for them. Don't throw away your pattern-save it for later, in case you decide to make another. Try using appliques from your old clothing to decorate your salwar. Maybe there was a pretty design from an old, worn out top you can use, or decorations from a pair of pants. If you want to save yourself some sewing, get material that already has a border on it. When you cut, make sure the border is at the bottom of the pieces-the shirt, the pants, and the sleeve ends. This will also make the hems of your clothing look great, with absolutely no effort from you. Put the pins in across, not length wise, when you're attaching the pattern to the fabric. If this is too difficult, pin them normally and then switch them before you sew. If you don't, you run the risk of breaking the needle when it hits the pin. And that sharp tip can go anywhere, including into your eye, if you're not careful.
